We currently offer interscholastic volleyball, soccer, and basketball to students in grades 5-12. Costs are paid through donations, admission fees, and support payment from the school’s general fund. Even with these sources, it is hoped that parents will participate as volunteers throughout the athletic seasons. Parents are asked to consider donating their time to the program by selling tickets or concessions, driving to games, and cleaning after the home games.
The drama club prepares a play for presentation to Immanuel members and the general public. The play is performed in mid-November. Students are encouraged to participate in the areas of acting, stage work, scenery, lighting and sound. Occasionally, there are plays that require singers and musicians. An adult advisor oversees the project.
Immanuel high school students who would like to take photographs, select photos for use, write captions, or plan the layout of the yearbook (annual) are encouraged to join the staff of the Trojan. An adult advisor oversees the project.
Immanuel’s high school students produce a school paper that depends on student writers, typists and editors. Students with interests in these areas are invited to join the staff of the Pioneer. An adult advisor oversees the production of the paper.
Students in grades 4-8 may participate in elementary chorus which meets weekly after the school day. This chorale group prepares music for worship services, Christmas caroling, and concerts.
Elementary chorus is the only musical group that is strictly extracurricular. For a complete description of Immanuel’s music program see Music classes in Part Three.
We consider an extracurricular activity participant ineligible when the participant is not making satisfactory progress in academic studies. The participant will regain eligibility when he or she achieves acceptable academic progress as determined and reported by the participant’s teachers. Under no circumstances are failing grades satisfactory progress.
A participant must be enrolled in classes that total at least three credits. We handle part-time student exceptions on an individual basis.
Participants in extracurricular activities must be working satisfactorily and homework must be kept current. Teachers are to report to the principal when a student is falling behind in his or her work. The principal will inform the student, as well as the student’s coach or activity advisor and parents. If the student’s effort and quality of work have not improved after one week, as determined by the classroom teacher and principal, the principal will declare the student academically ineligible. Students who are declared academically ineligible will not be allowed to participate in extracurricular activities until they achieve an acceptable level of academic performance.
The following rules concerning eligibility apply to students in grades 7-12.
A student involved in a public offense may not represent the school in a public setting. A student found to have used or consumed, had in possession, bought, sold, or given away alcohol, drugs (controlled substances), or tobacco in any amount shall be suspended from participation in extracurricular activities, if that student is an athlete or participant. The student who is not an athlete or participant shall be denied the opportunity to participate in any after-school activities; however, with sufficient cause, the school board may grant a student permission to attend banquet and graduation. In all cases, the Board of Education will determine the starting date of the ineligibility, while the duration of the suspension will be in accordance with the provisions set forth in paragraph III.
This rule does not prohibit student participation in religious or parent-supervised events where nothing illegal, or morally or ethically wrong occurs with alcohol or tobacco.
It is not a violation for a student to be in possession of a controlled substance specifically prescribed for the student’s own use by the student’s doctor.
Where not expressly stated otherwise, Immanuel follows the rules of the MSHSL as listed in its handbook.
First Offense: After confirmation of the violation, the school will suspend a participant for two consecutive weeks. The student must miss a minimum of two athletic contests. Athletes are to continue practicing with the team.
Second Offense: After confirmation of the violation, a three week/six game suspension is given. The three week suspension should cause six games to be missed. Six games is the minimum; if more games are played within the three weeks, those games are also missed.
Third Offense: After confirmation of the third or subsequent violations, the participating student will lose eligibility for the next twelve consecutive interscholastic events or twenty-eight calendar days, whichever is greater. The student will participate in practice sessions during the period of ineligibility and is allowed to attend the banquet and graduation if the board grants permission beforehand.
Offense numbering shall be cumulative beginning with the student’s enrollment at Immanuel.
For any events, the student serving a suspension may attend as a spectator only.
First Offense: After confirmation of the violation, the participant may not participate in any after-school events for the next two consecutive weeks, except for the banquet and graduation if the board grants permission beforehand.
Second Offense: The participant may not participate in any after-school events for the next six consecutive weeks, except for the banquet and graduation if the board grants permission beforehand.
Third Offense: After confirmation of the third or subsequent violations, the student earns a nine week suspension. This suspension denies a student from participating in any after-school events, except the banquet and graduation if the board grants permission beforehand.
Offense numbering shall be cumulative beginning with the student’s enrollment at Immanuel.
For any events, the student serving a suspension may attend as a spectator only.
Participants and parents may request a conference with teachers and school officials regarding reinstatement as a participant in after-school activities.
