“A Word of Truth” from Immanuel Lutheran Church of Mankato…

This is Eternal Life

A Word of Truth #078 (John 17:3)

Opinions come in large quantities and they come as varied as the people who have them.

“I think this is_____________.”

“I don’t think that way at all. I think it is __________________.”

“I don’t think either one of you is right. It is_______________.” And so it goes.

There are likewise many opinions about spiritual matters:

“I think God wants this.”

“I think God means that.”

Opinions attempt to answer spiritual questions such as:

What is faith?

What is salvation?

What is eternal life? Where do we find it? How does it come?

Jesus answered these questions with more than opinion. He answered them with the truth of God’s Word. In a prayer to His heavenly Father, Jesus said: “THIS is eternal life. That [sinners] may know You—the only true God—and Jesus Christ whom You have sent” (John 17:3).

Forgiveness of sins and eternal life come through Jesus Christ and Him alone.

Let all opinions be silent.

God has spoken.

This is Eternal Life (II)

A Word of Truth #079 (John 17:3)

On Maundy Thursday evening—the night before he died, Jesus prayed to His heavenly Father in the presence of His disciples and said, “This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.

Contrary to the opinion of many in our world today, there is only one, true God—the LORD God revealed in the Bible. He created our world, and it is He who sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to save the world from sin, its author—Satan, and its consequence—death. This Jesus did by living a perfect life, and then suffering an innocent death upon the cross. When the Spirit of God leads individuals, such as you and me, to confess our sins and trust in Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of those sins, we do receive from God the gift of eternal life.
