A Word of Truth #572
“One nation under God"—that familiar phrase in the Pledge of Allegiance is so very important, because it is a truth we tend to forget. In his proclamation establishing a National Day of Thanksgiving, President Abraham Lincoln alluded to that fact. As he described the bountiful blessings our country then enjoyed—even during a time of civil war—he commented that “we are prone to forget the source from which they come.” Long before Lincoln’s proclamation, the Psalmist David declared this truth: “All nations whom You have made shall come and worship before You, O Lord, and shall glorify Your name. For You are great, and do wondrous things; You alone are God” (Ps. 86:9-10). As we celebrate Thanksgiving and the Christmas holiday season, may we humbly remember to thank and praise God, for it is He who makes and blesses the nations!
